01

Why Jacket Fit Is Everything

Off-the-rack jackets are cut to fit a statistical average — which means they rarely fit any individual perfectly. A jacket that pulls across the back, gaps at the collar, or swamps the shoulders undermines even the finest fabric. Fit is the first luxury.

Our made-to-measure service eliminates this compromise entirely. Every jacket we craft is built around your exact measurements, your posture, and your preferred silhouette — ensuring a result that feels as good as it looks.

02

How to Take Your Measurements

Use a soft fabric measuring tape and, where possible, have a second person assist you. Always measure over a well-fitted shirt and keep the tape snug but not tight.

量体裁衣 — 专业测量Professional measurement — the foundation of a great fit

Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under your armpits. Keep it level and parallel to the floor.

Waist

Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, typically an inch or two above your navel.

Shoulders

Measure from the edge of one shoulder across the back to the other. The hardest measurement to alter — get it right.

Sleeve Length

From the top of your shoulder down to your wrist bone, arm slightly bent. Allow ½ inch of shirt cuff to show.

Hips / Seat

Around the widest part of your hips, approximately 8 inches below your natural waist. Critical for longer jackets.

Jacket Length

From the top of your shoulder down your back to where you'd like the jacket to end. The hem should cover your seat.

03

The Five Hallmarks of a Perfect Shoulder Fit

The shoulder is the single most important fit point on any jacket — and the hardest to alter. Getting it right from the start is non-negotiable.

肩部合身细节The shoulder seam should sit precisely at the natural shoulder edge

I
Seam Placement

The shoulder seam sits exactly at the edge of your shoulder — not hanging over your arm, not pulling inward.

II
No Divots

No dimples or divots at the top of the sleeve head. These indicate the sleeve is too narrow or the shoulder too wide.

III
Collar Lie

The jacket collar lies flat against your shirt collar with no gap — a gap signals the back is too long or the collar is cut incorrectly.

IV
Chest Roll

When buttoned, the lapels roll naturally and the chest lies flat without pulling or gaping at the button stance.

V
Back Smoothness

The back is smooth and free of horizontal creases (too tight) or vertical folds (too loose).

04

Sleeve Length & the Shirt Cuff Rule

袖长与衬衫袖口细节The ½-inch shirt cuff reveal — a hallmark of impeccable tailoring

"Your shirt cuff should peek out approximately ½ inch below the jacket sleeve. This small detail signals intentionality and polish."

When standing with your arms relaxed at your sides, the jacket sleeve should end at the base of your wrist — right where your hand begins. Too short, and the jacket looks undersized. Too long, and it reads as borrowed.

On our made-to-measure jackets, sleeve length is set to your exact specification. We also offer working (surgeon's) cuffs as a standard feature — a mark of true bespoke craftsmanship.

Understanding Jacket Fits: Slim, Regular & Relaxed

三种版型对比Slim, Regular, and Relaxed — each with its own distinct silhouette

Slim Fit

Cut close to the body with pronounced waist suppression. Ideal for lean, athletic builds.

Chest–waist differential: 5–6 in

Regular Fit

The timeless standard. Flattering across a wide range of body types and appropriate for virtually every occasion.

Chest–waist differential: 6–7 in

Relaxed Fit

A fuller cut with minimal waist suppression. Preferred for comfort or the classic British drape cut.

Chest–waist differential: 7–8 in

Common Fit Problems & How We Solve Them

Even with careful measurement, certain fit challenges arise from individual body proportions. Here's how our made-to-measure process addresses the most common issues.

Collar gap at the back

Caused by a forward head posture or a high back. We adjust the back neck point and collar stand to eliminate the gap entirely.

Pulling across the back

Indicates the back width or chest is too narrow. We add ease across the upper back and adjust the side seams accordingly.

Excess fabric at the waist

Common in off-the-rack jackets for athletic builds. We suppress the waist seams to follow your natural contour.

One shoulder higher than the other

A natural asymmetry most people have. We build a shoulder pad or canvas adjustment to compensate, so the jacket hangs level.

Sleeves twisting outward

Caused by the pitch of the sleeve head not matching your arm's natural hang. We re-pitch the sleeve during the fitting process.

08

Made-to-Measure vs. Off-the-Rack

Off-the-rack jackets are engineered for volume — they must fit the broadest possible range of bodies with the fewest possible patterns. The result is a series of compromises.

Our made-to-measure service begins with your measurements and ends with a jacket built for you alone. You choose the fabric from our curated library of over 500 premium cloths, select your lining, buttons, lapel style, and pocket configuration — and we construct the jacket to your exact specifications, with free alterations included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

How do I know if a jacket fits correctly at the shoulders?+
The shoulder seam should sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder — the bony point where your shoulder meets your arm. If the seam hangs over your arm, the jacket is too large. If it pulls inward and creates a divot at the sleeve head, it is too small. This is the single most important fit point and the hardest to alter, so always prioritize getting the shoulder right.
What is the difference between chest size and jacket size?+
Your chest measurement (in inches or centimeters) is your body measurement. Your jacket size is typically the same number — a 40-inch chest corresponds to a size 40 jacket. However, the jacket is cut with additional ease (usually 2–3 inches) built in to allow for comfortable movement. For made-to-measure, we work from your actual chest measurement and add the appropriate ease based on your preferred fit style.
Can I alter an off-the-rack jacket to fit like a made-to-measure one?+
To a degree, yes — a skilled tailor can take in the waist, shorten the sleeves, and adjust the jacket length. However, the shoulder width and back width are extremely difficult and costly to alter, and the chest cannot be significantly enlarged. If the shoulders fit well, a good tailor can improve most other dimensions. If the shoulders are wrong, no amount of alteration will produce a truly great result.
How long does a made-to-measure jacket take to produce?+
Our standard made-to-measure turnaround is 4–6 weeks from the date your measurements and fabric selection are confirmed. Rush orders can be accommodated in 2–3 weeks for an additional fee. We recommend allowing at least 6 weeks for any event-specific jacket, such as a wedding suit, to ensure time for any final adjustments.
What if my measurements change after I receive my jacket?+
All our made-to-measure jackets are constructed with seam allowances that allow for future alterations of up to 1–2 inches in the chest and waist. We also store your measurements on file, so if you need a new jacket in the future, the process is even faster. For significant changes in body shape, we recommend a fresh set of measurements to ensure the best possible result.
